About me…..
My paintings grow from a lifelong relationship with the Maine landscape—its coastlines, marshes, islands, fields and changing light. Increasingly, I am interested in atmosphere and weather: the movement of clouds, shifts in light, the effects of wind and water, and the way changing conditions transform a familiar landscape.
Observation has always been central to my work. I paint from direct experience as well as memory and reference, looking for the moment when a place becomes more than a description of itself.
Teaching has been another important part of my life. For more than four decades I have taught drawing and painting, helping students move beyond simply reproducing what they see toward understanding light, color, atmosphere, composition and their own individual way of seeing.
My current work is increasingly concerned with weather and atmosphere and with our changing relationship to the natural world. This has led me toward a new body of observational work focused on storms, clouds, extreme weather and the landscape transformed by them.
