Creating the Contents of my Heart

Creating the Contents of My Heart

Years ago, I embarked on a journey that would shape my artistic identity. I owned a charming little store in Brunswick, Maine, called Maine Street Art. It was a haven for art supplies and a gallery for local artists to showcase their incredible work. Among the many faces that frequented my shop, one gentleman stood out. He visited almost daily, purchasing paper, pens, pencils, and various art materials. Curiosity got the better of me one day, and I asked him, “How do you use all of this stuff? What’s your inspiration?”

His response was simple yet profoundly impactful: “I’m working to paint the contents of my heart.” This statement has lingered in my mind ever since, igniting a spark of inspiration in my own creative journey.

Fast forward nearly 25 years, and I now find myself as a full-time artist, renting a dedicated art studio where I immerse myself in creativity. I also teach art and share my love for music, filling my life with artistic expression. I feel most authentic when I reach for the contents of my heart, translating my emotions and experiences into tangible forms of art.

Over the years, I’ve painted countless subjects that resonate with me: birds, flowers, and the beautiful landscapes of Maine that capture my spirit. I’ve created portraits of my granddaughters and my beloved cat, Charlie. As I sit in my studio, surrounded by these creations, I realize that I am indeed fulfilling the promise of painting the contents of my heart.

As I continue on this artistic path, I hope my heart will expand, allowing for deeper visions and greater expressions. Teaching art has brought me immense joy, especially when I see individuals bloom in their own creative expressions. Many of my students have spent a lifetime believing they lack creativity, and witnessing their transformation is truly rewarding.

In a world filled with challenges and uncertainties, I often wish I could make a larger impact, but I hold onto that quiet statement from years ago. I aspire to pass it on, hoping it brings satisfaction, soulful peace, and contentment to others. Creativity is a powerful force, and I believe that by embracing the contents of our hearts, we can all contribute to a brighter, more beautiful world.
